Event Report

Lakeland celebrated the 53rd Anniversary of Earth Day with the City’s second annual DEED event, ”Drive Electric Earth Day Lakeland 2023”.

This free, family-friendly outdoor event was held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 in downtown Lakeland’s beautiful Munn Park, adjacent to the Lakeland Farmers Curb Market.  The event featured local EV owners showcasing their vehicles, answering visitor’s questions, & sharing their EV-enthusiasm. The Lakeland Farmers Market's wonderful weekly fresh produce, delicious food, and crafts booths added to the festivities.

Eleven electric vehicles (EVs) were on display, including: Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Chevy Bolt, Nissan LEAF, Ford F150 Lightning pickup, Rivian R1T pickup, and several Tesla Model 3.

EV exhibitors included individual owners and Lakeland Electric Utility.

Visitors enjoyed learning about EVs at our DEED welcome canopies, which featured EV educational displays, free prize drawings, an “EV-IQ” quiz, and children’s EV craft activities. Drawing prizes included Bonsai Tree kits, a set of 14 dessert place settings, a gift certificate for Yoga classes donated by Satya Life Yoga Studio, and a programmable thermostat donated by Lakeland Electric.

Lakeland Mayor Bill Mutz issued a Proclamation designating April 22, 2023, as “Drive Electric Earth Day Lakeland”.  The proclamation states that the City of Lakeland is dedicated to leadership in clean energy, energy conservation, sustainability, and ensuring a healthy environment for its citizens.

Drive Electric Earth Day Lakeland was organized with the help of volunteers from the Polk EV Outreach Committee, the League of Women Voters of Polk County, the Polk Democratic Environmental Caucus, and the Ancient Islands Sierra Club’s Clean Energy Committee.

The groups also look forward to hosting National Drive Electric Week (NDEW) events in September 2023, as well as our third annual Drive Electric Earth Day event in April 2024.

This eye-catching Tesla Model 3 was the hit of the show! The proud owners designed & applied the customized exterior wrap themselves. Beautiful Munn Park and our DEED welcome canopies housing EV educational displays and kids' crafts are in the background.
